High school hoops update: C-Hoops Challenge, LakesGiving on deck; new statewide rankings

For many N.C. high school basketball teams, Tuesday night is the official start of the season.

It’s also a busy week for tournaments, including two big events in the Charlotte-area after Thanksgiving.

Read below for schedules, Monday’s boxscores and the latest N.C. statewide rankings.

Tim Hall, Westminster Catawba: had his fourth double-double of the season in a 70-55 win over Nation Ford at the Milltown Classic: 18 points, 16 rebounds, four blocks.

Jacob Joyner, Stuart Cramer: 23 points, three steals and three assists in an 80-55 win over Cherryville.

Kyra Lewis, Central Cabarrus: After going for 19 points, 16 rebounds in her season debut against 1-o-1 Prep, Lewis had 12 points, 11 rebound in Tuesday’s 55-23 win over Berry.

Deirdre Miller, South Mecklenburg girls: 23 points, seven rebounds in Saturday’s 63-45 win over Garner.

Rashad McCormick, Hough: 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks in an 68-67 overtime win at Mooresville.

Big Tournaments on tap

The Charlotte Hoops Challenge returns for its 13th year. In the past, the event has brought future NBA players like Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins, Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, Miami’s Bam Adebayo and Boston’s Grant Williams. Future WNBA stars like A’ja Wilson have also played in the event that began in 2010.

The tournament has shifted to a more local format in recent years and continued to enjoy success.

Key games include Chambers-Northside Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and JM Robinson-West Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $15 per day and available at charlottehoopschallenge.com

This year, Phenom Hoops is hosting the Phenom Lakesgiving Classic at Lake Norman HIgh School. The regional field is full of teams with large fan followings and the first-year event should attract strong crowds.

Key games include Lake Norman-Ardrey Kell girls at 4:30 p.m. Friday and the Lake Norman-Central Cabarrus boys at 9 p.m. Saturday. Lake Norman, a 4A school, will face the No. 1 ranked 3A team in North Carolina (full polls below).

Tickets are $15 per day at the door.

North Mecklenburg will also host the annual Leroy Holden Challenge, a four-team event with girls teams from North, Porter Ridge and Mooresville, Friday and Saturday.

Tuesday’s Key Games

Harding at West Charlotte, 7:30: The Lions play the first game in their new gym, named after legendary coach Charles McCullough, and face their rival. West Charlotte lost its season-opener to Oak HIll Saturday at a Phenom Hoops event at Charlotte Country Day.

Myers Park at Richmond Senior, 7:30: The nationally ranked Mustangs are ranked No. 1 in The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 preseason poll and make their debut in Rockingham. Richmond lost Mr. Basketball Paul McNeil, but the Raiders beat Purnell Sweet 81-45 in their season-opener last week.

Concord Academy at Carmel Christian, 7:30: The state’s top game matches the reigning N.C. private schools 3A champions (6-0 Concord Academy) with the reigning 4A champions from Carmel (4-0).
