HS Boys Rewind: Carmel Christian loses lead, makes free throws late, stops Concord Academy

The game of the night in North Carolina lived up to the billing Tuesday.

Carmel Christian, No. 2 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, led by 13 points in the second half but had to hold off a furious rally from Concord Academy before winning 59-52.

Carmel (5-0) was outscored 34-28 in the second half, but held on for the win behind 14 points each from Jaeden Mustaf and Bryce Cash plus 11 from Boston Smith. The Cougars only made three field goals in the fourth quarter, including two from Smith, but they made 9-of-15 free throws. Michael Marcus and Khamani Wertz each made 3-of-4.

Concord Academy got 16 points, 10 rebounds from Avion PInner, 14 from Isaiah Tate and 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists from JJ Moore. Pinner scored nine of his team’s 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Eli Clark, Metrolina Christian: 30 points, seven rebounds in a 78-62 over Asheville Christian.

Isaiah Evans, North Mecklenburg: 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and four blocks in a season-opening 82-22 win.

Grant Hamilton, Weddington: scored all 20 of his points in the second half as the Warriors rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat Ardrey Kell 74-65.

Elijah Strong, Myers Park: team-high 20 points as the Mustangs, No. 1 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, debuted with a dominant 78-37 win over Richmond Senior.

Quay Watson, Hopewell: 32 points, nine assists ina 64-55 win over East Meck. Watson had his second straight 30-point night.
