Friday night in Atlanta, Carmel Christian ran out to a 21-point lead over national power Calvary Christian from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Then the Cougars lost all of their lead, went to double overtime but rallied to win 76-69.

Carmel (6-0) led 22-10 after the first quarter and 36-20 at halftime. But Calvary Christian dominated the second half, outscoring the Cougars 37-21 to get back into the game.

Carmel got a put-back basket from Bryce Cash to force double-overtime, where the Cougars got more big baskets and big plays from Mustaf, Cash, Khamani Wertz and Boston Smith to get the win.

Former Chambers star Jaylen Curry shot 6-of-21 but had 22 points, four rebounds and three steals for Calvary Christian (1-1). Calvary Christian wing Carl Cherenfant -- a Memphis recruit ranked among the nation’s top 25 players at his position -- had 26 points and six rebounds.

Mustaf led Carmel with 23 points, 10 rebounds; Cash had 22 points, seven rebounds; Wertz had 15 points and three rebounds; and Smith had seven points, three rebounds and two steals.

Saturday’s Previews

(Girls) Myers Park (1-0) vs. Watauga (1-0), at Harding High, noon – This is the Gym-1 opening game of Saturday’s Charlotte Hoops Challenge schedule. Myers Park is the state’s seventh-ranked 4A team this week, and the Mustangs remain powerful, despite the absence (for a few more weeks) of standout G Mia Xerras, who is recovering from knee surgery. Watauga opened its season last week by beating defending 4A state champion Chambers and features sophomore Kate Sears, who had 25 points and 10 rebounds in that Chambers game.

(Boys) Hopewell (2-0) vs. Wayne Country Day (3-1), at Fayetteville State Univ., 4:30 p.m. – This is the fourth in a seven-game schedule at the Hoops and Dreams Classic. Hopewell is the state’s ninth-ranked 4A team, while Wayne Country Day is a perennial 2A power in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association. Hopewell features a strong backcourt, led by G Quay Watson, a junior who averaged 18.5 points a game last season. Wayne Country Day lost several leading scorers off last year’s team but has a strong frontcourt, with 6-7 Kayleb Coles and 6-6 Carlos Vazquez, both juniors.

(Boys) Jay M. Robinson (1-0) vs. West Charlotte (1-1), at Harding High, 7:30 p.m. – It’s the final game of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, and it matches the defending 2A state public school champion against the defending 3A state champ. Both teams are loaded with potential college standouts.

(Boys) Lake Norman (1-1) vs. Central Cabarrus (1-0), at Lake Norman High, 9 p.m. – This is the finale of the two-day Phenom Lakesgiving Classic at Lake Norman. The host Wildcats will try to take care of the basketball against the wicked Central Cabarrus pressing defense. Henderson Williams is averaging 12 points and 7.5 rebounds for Lake Norman, the No. 11 team in The Observer’s Sweet 16 rankings. Central Cabarrus, a 3A state semifinalist last season, demolished Berry Academy 79-30 in its opener. The Vikings’ warp-speed offense means that 8-10 players see plenty of action, although F Gavin Bullock is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.

(Boys) Mooresville (1-1) vs. North Mecklenburg (1-0), at North Mecklenburg, 5:30 – This is the tentative finals of the Leroy Holden Classic, and for this matchup to happen, Mooresville must beat Porter Ridge and North Mecklenburg top Providence in Friday’s semifinals. Should this final materialize, it will pit Mooresville’s tough defense against North Mecklenburg’s high-power attack. Guards Evaan Ezhilan and A.J. Parsley return from Mooresville’s 21-4 team of a year ago. North Mecklenburg, No. 6 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, is led by 6-7 junior F Isaiah Evans, who averaged 19 points a game last season.
