HS Notes: Hough football coach Jenkins steps down; Providence Day’s Davis gets statewide honor

Hough High football coach Matt Jenkins said he had been on the phone with players and their parents all morning. Jenkins speaks to the media about his former student Devin Chandler. “Devin was a great kid, you know,” Jenkins said.

When Hough High football coach Matt Jenkins told North Carolina’s Mack Brown that he was thinking about stepping down, but that he wasn’t quite sure about it, the head Tar Heel gave Jenkins a key piece of advice.

“I told Mack, that ‘I don’t know if it’s the right decision. What if I want to come back in a few years,’” Jenkins said. “Mack said, ‘If your heart tells you it’s the right decision right now, it won’t matter if it’s the right decision in two years.’”

Jenkins, 49, announced his resignation from coaching Hough football on Tuesday afternoon. In six years, he turned the Huskies into a national power. Hough reached the N.C. 4A quarterfinals this season.

Jenkins said he’ll remain as a teacher at the school and coach girls golf and softball. He’s not ruling out a return to coaching football, but felt the time was right to stop — at least for now.

His daughters, Ella and Olivia, are juniors at Hough, and one plays softball and the other is on the swim team. Jenkins, knowing they’ll leave for college soon, said he wanted to spend more time with them and his wife, Lisa.

“It was something that we thought about for awhile,” Jenkins said, “and now is the right time. I think the program is in good shape and I hope I left it better than I found it. Hough’s got a bunch of really good football players returning next year and whomever (Hough principal David Farley and athletic director Lori DeMarcus) hire will do a fantastic job. The truth is, he’ll probably do a better job than I did.”

Jenkins was 63-15 as head football coach at Hough. In 13 seasons as a head coach — in Nevada and North Carolina — Jenkins is 99-46. Jenkins started coaching in California right out of college and has coached for 31 years in total, including college stops at Penn State and Cornell.

Jenkins, who celebrated his 20-year wedding anniversary with wife Lisa in the summer, said he still loves to coach and teach.

“I’m just changing desks, that’s all,” he said, “and maybe coaching sports that take a lot less time. I’ve coached a lot of football games ... and sacrificed a lot with my family. It comes to a point where (my daughters) are going to leave (home) soon and I’ve missed a lot and I’m not going to miss anymore.”
