‘He’s that good.’ North Meck’s Isaiah Evans, aka ‘Showtime Slim’ has 45 in Chambers win
Note: Scroll down for Saturday’s results
North Mecklenburg High star Isaiah Evans’ Instagram handle is “Showtime Slim.”
Friday night at rival Chambers, Evans showed everyone why that nickname is perfect for him.
The skinny national 5-star recruit poured in 45 points — a top 10 performance in school history — in a 77-74 overtime win in front of a standing-room-only crowd.
Evans hit a 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired to win the game and set off a massive celebration. He had 29 points in the second half and six made 3-pointers for the game.
“You know when you come over here to Chambers it’s always going to be a great environment,” Vikings Head Coach Duane Lewis said. “They are a great team, they have a bunch of college players and they play hard. We like to think we are almost a carbon copy of each other.”
Lewis felt he would need a big game from Evans, a 6-6 junior ranked No. 16 nationally by 247 Sports. And Evans sure delivered.
Evans, who was recently on an unofficial visit to Duke, has offers from schools like Florida State, Kansas, N.C. State and Tennessee.
“You know, we expect things like that out of Isaiah,” Lewis said. “You have some people that are like, ‘Well we don’t know if he is that good.’ He is that good.”
Evans’ big game and big shot gave his team a big road win — and a big step up in the Queen City conference race.
“You always want to get one on the road,” Lewis said. “We got that one on the road, but just about anyone in our conference can win it. West Charlotte is obviously the defending 3A state champions.”
For Evans, this was a game he knew his team could steal, and he said he was determined to help get it.
“Obviously (the win) is going to boost our confidence a lot,” Evans said. “But we come in with top notch confidence anyway, win or loss.”
For Evans, this game was also a little get back as one of the first things he mentioned was how Chambers took both contests a season ago.
“Everyone knows we lost both times last year (to Chambers),” Evans said. “So it felt good to be the one to end the game.”
Three who made a difference
Jahmir Brown, Chambers: The senior guard really stepped his game up to a new level in this game. He played exceptionally well in the fourth quarter during Chambers run, bringing them back to ultimately take the lead at one point.
Isaiah Evans, North Meck: He is the No. 16 ranked player in the class of 2024 on 247 Sports for a reason. Evans is a multi-dimensional player that can shoot the three, drive it to the basket, dish it to his teammates, rebound, etc. He did all of these things tonight. He also happened to finish with 45 points and a buzzer beat at the end of overtime.
Maurio Hanson, Chambers: Hanson seems to be the matchup nightmare for a lot of teams the Cougars have faced this season. He can get to his spots in the paint as well as stretch the floor and force defenders to guard him at the three-point line.
Worth mentioning
▪ This year’s matchup looked a lot different than a season ago — but not because of the lack of high quality basketball being played. It was different in that both teams lost key pieces from a season ago. Chambers lost Jaylen Curry and Daniel Sanford while North Meck lost Jordan Crawford.
▪ An altercation in the stands halted the game at the tail end of the first quarter. Referees said it started because things were being thrown on the court.
▪ Both games between these two teams went to overtime last year.
What’s next
Chambers will host West Charlotte on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m., while North Meck will host Hopewell, the same day and time.

Independence snaps East Meck’s hot streak
Independence boys’ basketball coach Preston Davis had seen it happen time after time this season.
The Patriots would build a first-half lead, then collapse at some point in the second half.
They were outscored 20-5 in the third quarter of a loss to West Charlotte; 19-10 in the third quarter of a losing effort against Mallard Creek; 10-3 in the fourth quarter of a loss to Charlotte Catholic; and 26-13 in the fourth quarter of a game they lost to Nation Ford.
“I kept telling them, ‘If we can just put a complete and solid effort together …’ ” Davis said.
Friday night, the Patriots did that – at a pretty good time, too.
They outscored East Mecklenburg, the state’s seventh-ranked 4A team, in every quarter of a 68-51 Southwestern 4A upset victory.
“This,” Davis said afterward, “is what we’re capable of.”
DEFENSE DOES THE TRICK
The Patriots (9-7, 2-2 Southwestern 4A) have played lock-down defense against nearly every opponent this season, but the offense frequently failed them.
“We have only two players who were with the varsity for all of last season,” Davis said. “They’re still working on some things. They’ve been working hard, and tonight it all came together.”
The Patriots’ defense was superb against East Mecklenburg (12-2, 3-1), which entered the game averaging 72.5 points a contest.
“Their defense really took us out of what we like to do,” Eagles’ coach Jason Buzzard said. “Give them credit. They played really well tonight.”
East Mecklenburg shot 33 percent from the floor (17-of-56), and Eagles’ long-distance shooting standout Jordon Nevill scored only 11 points — less than half his season average (23.5). And teammate Jonah Lawrence, averaging 22.1 points a game, was held to 13.
“I’m a defensive-minded coach,” said Davis, a standout forward on some superb Independence teams in the late 1990s, including a N.C. 4A state champion. “I told our guys, ‘This will be a test of our defense against their offense.’ But I knew that our offense would have to play well too.”
It did.
OFFENSE COMES THROUGH
The Patriots made 24-of-52 from the floor (46 percent) and found their way to the foul line frequently (16-of-22).
The lead changed hands six times in the first half, and Independence led 31-27 at intermission.
That set the stage for the second half, and Davis admitted afterward that he wasn’t sure what he would see from his team.
“They did a lot of things right,” he said.
The Patriots outscored the Eagles 17-7 in the third period and piled up a 20-17 margin in the final quarter, keeping a safe lead by hitting 12-of-15 from the foul line.
Zion Bosley-Slade scored 18 points, Kolbe Johnson added 17, and two other Patriots (Yancy Thomason and Tosh Alberga) also were in double figures. The Patriots outrebounded the Eagles 38-28.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Buzzard noted that his team won’t have much time to console itself, with Southwestern 4A leader Charlotte Catholic next on the schedule, on Tuesday night at Catholic.
“It’s a long season,” he said. “We’ll look at video from tonight and learn from it. I always tell our players, ‘Either you win or you learn.’ We’ll learn from this.
“We’ll have to,” he added. “Charlotte Catholic is a strong team.”
The big picture looks good for East Mecklenburg, its coach said.
“This is a good team, and it’s a tight team,” he added. “There’s no selfishness with this group. I think we’ll respond from this.”
And Independence?
“I really felt that we were better than our record,” Davis said. “A game like this shows our players what we’re capable of.”
“It’s a long season,” he added. “We are still in this race. We were beating Charlotte Catholic and let it get away. We need to remember what we did tonight, and keep doing it.”
