Boys’ HS basketball rewind: Hough stuns West Charlotte, and adding star player soon

NOTE: Scroll down for Wednesday’s coverage

Coming into Tuesday’s Queen City conference game with West Charlotte, Hough High coach Jason Grube was hoping to see his team get a spark and snap a two-game losing streak.

With new Hough player Trey Horton watching from the bench, the Huskies gave Grube exactly what he wanted, beating West Charlotte 65-56 behind a monster performance from Rashad McCormick.

“We struggled a little bit during Christmas break,” Grube said. “We talked about redemption. We had one get away from us at Chambers and we really wanted redemption.”

McCormick made sure of that. The 6-6 wing had 36 points and 15 rebounds.

“I have really been shooting bad all season,” McCormick saidd. “I just refocused, got in the gym, and put up shots at 6 a.m. (Tuesday) morning. I felt really confident coming into today’s game.”

First-half highlights

Hough jumped out to a 8-0 lead before Lions head coach Jacoby Davis quickly called a timeout to settle his team down. The Huskies were getting the majority of their points in transition off of Lion turnovers.

The Lions, defending N.C. 3A state champions, got back into the game, tying it at 13 after the first quarter with a superior defensive effort. The Lions allowed five points the last five minutes of the quarter.

The second quarter was an excellent display of offense and defense by both teams. Hough would take a 31-27 advantage into halftime.

Second-half highlights

West Charlotte came out attacking in the third quarter. The Lions were getting good looks at the rim — largely to the thanks of sophomore Chadlyn Traylor. The Lions took a one point advantage into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was managed well by Hough. They were able to get a lot of offensive rebounds — in turn — allowing them to take more time off the clock.

“We were strong down the stretch and we didn’t give it away like we did at Chambers,” Grube mentioned. “We are excited about that.”

Three who made a difference

Rashad McCormick, Hough: The 6-6 senior seemed to never come off the floor. He was able to score on all three levels and matched his offensive output with his defense, constantly guarding the Lions’ big men all game long.

Chadlyn Traylor, West Charlotte: The Lions point guard took over in the third quarter establishing himself in the offense. He was outstanding in isolation situations causing his defender to get off balance, ending in layups for Traylor.

Cole Galombeck, Hough: Galombeck’s highlights didn’t necessarily come on the offensive side of the ball, but rather, the defensive side. He had a couple big time defensive stands, just when it seemed that West Charlotte was going to mount a comeback.

Worth mentioning

Hough has added Trey Horton, a Divsion I Texas El-Paso commit. Horton played last season and the first half of this season at Providence Day. Grube can’t wait to see where Horton fits into the “puzzle” of his team.

“I am really just getting my eyes on him (Horton),” Grube said. “He just got here today, so we will put him in the puzzle and we will see what we’ve got.”

Hough went to a 2-3 zone defensive look late in the first quarter to try and prevent the Lions from getting easy looks. They forced West Charlotte to take three-point shots.

What’s next?

Hough will host Mallard Creek on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. while West Charlotte will face Chambers next week on Jan. 10, also at 7:30 p.m.
