South Iredell mourns sudden loss of volunteer baseball coach Chris Davis
A volunteer coach at South Iredell died suddenly this week, rocking a high school community less than an hour’s drive from uptown Charlotte.
A release from Iredell-Statesville Schools said that Chris Davis was on campus performing field maintenance by himself when he suffered a medical emergency. Iredell County emergency personnel arrived at the scene but were unable to resuscitate him.
Davis, who was 48, was a volunteer coach at the school for more than six years.
“We are beyond saddened by the tragic passing of our beloved Coach Davis,” South Iredell baseball coach Jeff Peck said. “His infectious passion for the game of baseball and his consistent modeling on how to do the right thing, and do things the right way will sorely be missed by all of us in our South Iredell baseball family.”
The family will hold a service Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Beulah Baptist Church in Statesville to honor the coach. The receiving will begin at 2 p.m. with the memorial to follow. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the South Iredell baseball program.
“South Iredell lost a tremendous coach, facilitator of knowledge on and off the field, a genuinely great person and I have lost a lifetime friend,” South Iredell principal Robert Little said.
