High School Basketball: Butler avoids upset; Latin gets a a big one on busy Tuesday

Butler played a true trap game Tuesday night against Providence.

With a big Southwestern 4A conference game with East Meck set up for Friday, the Bulldogs trailed in the first two quarters against Providence and needed overtime to win 69-66.

Butler (14-4, 7-1 Southwestern 4A) got 17 points from Bryson Heath, 14 from Tyler Showalter, 13 from Zion McDuffie and 12 from Steph Soulzos.

Providence was led by 20 points by Clayton Gaither.

Charlotte Latin 68, No. 5 Cannon School 60: Ned Hull had 25 points and five rebounds to lead Charlotte Latin to an upset in the CISAA. Latin (12-7, 4-1) pulled into a first-place tie with Cannon (23-6, 4-1).

Latin led 12-9 after the first quarter and managed to keep it for most of the game, earning the key win. Nic Levy had 17 points for the Hawks and Sean Rose (14 points, six rebounds) and Tyler Hendley (10 points, five rebounds) also had strong games.

Austin Swartz and Isaiah Henry combined for 43 of Cannon’s 60 points.

Evan Ashemore, Carolina International: 25 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 96-56 win over Piedmont Community Charter.

Jahmir Brown, Chambers: 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 57-56 win over Hough.

Tim Hall, Westminster Catawba: 33 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks in a 62-56 win over Gaston Day. Hall got his 25th double-double of the season and in the same game scored his 2,000th point and grabbed his 1,000th rebound.

Isaiah Martino, Lake Norman Charter: season-high 27 points and made 3-of-4 3-point attempts and was 11-of-15 from the field in a 68-50 win over Carson.

Randall Pettus, Bessemer City: 19 points, 10 assists, nine steals, seven rebounds in a 78-59 win over Thomas Jefferson.
