Community School of Davidson, Lincoln Charter win NCHSAA 1A/2A state swim championships

Senior Luke Weber led Community School of Davidson to its second straight 1A/2A state public school swim and diving championship Thursday.

Meanwhile, Lincoln Charter repeated as 1A/2A girls’ champion, despite not winning a single event.

The meet took place at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, where the 4A championships will take place Friday and the 3A meet on Saturday.

Weber leads boys

Weber was a dominant force in freestyle events, winning the 500-meter freestyle and finishing second in the 200 freestyle. He also swam on first-place teams in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Community School of Davidson finished with 272 points, with Raleigh Charter (235) and Mountain Island Charter (188) rounding out the top three.

The Outstanding Performer award in the boys’ competition went to Burns senior Jacob Jensen, who won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Jensen’s time in the 50 freestyle was 20.33 seconds, breaking the meet record of 20.42, set two years ago by Bradford Prep’s Reid Miller.

Mountain Island Charter freshman Beck Armstrong also had a big meet. He won the 100 backstroke and swam on the first-place 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Jack Lazaroski, Mason Greene and Nolan Berry joined Armstrong on the 400 freestyle relay, and the Raptors’ time of 3:17.52 was just .03 of a second off the meet record.

Winning with depth

Lincoln Charter managed to win the girls’ state title without a first-place finish in any event. The Eagles totaled 250 points, to 209 for runner-up Elkin and 193 for third-place Community School of Davidson.

Top swimmer for Lincoln Charter was Grace Wilson, who was second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle.

Union Academy senior Maddilyn Geyer was a double-winner, capturing the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Her younger sister, Kayda, a freshman, took first place in the 100 breaststroke.

Community School of Davidson senior Eliana White had a big meet, winning the 100 freestyle, finishing second in the 50 freestyle, and swimming anchor leg on the second-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Outstanding Performer honors went to Eno River Academy’s Mary Shanahan, who won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
