Charlotte-area swimmers’ haul: 1 NCISAA team title, 19 championships, 3 records
Charlotte-area swimmers won one team championship, 19 individual or relay championships, and set three records this week in the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association state swimming meets at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
Charlotte Latin took its fourth consecutive boys’ state team title in Division 1 on Monday, and there were 13 Charlotte-area champions in the Division 1 boys and girls finals.
Latin has won 19 state swim titles all-time.
Five more Charlotte-area swimmers or teams won state titles Tuesday in the Division 3 meet.
Several area swimmers also placed in the Division 2 finals Tuesday.
Charlotte Latin set the three records, each in a relay event.
Zachary Spicer, Norvy Clontz, Aidan Hill and Wiley Spinner teamed to win the 200 medley relay in a record time of one minute 32.79 seconds. Later in the meet, Spinner, Clontz and Spicer teamed with James Harper to capture the 400 freestyle relay in a record time of 3:05.18.
Also setting a state meet record was the Latin girls’ 400 freestyle team – Lila Connor, Dorothy Patterson, Charley Floyd and Ivy Monk – in a time of 3:28.87.
Clontz, a sophomore, also won the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
Division 1 boys
Charlotte Latin’s state champs were the two relay teams; Clontz (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle); and Aidan Hill (100 butterfly).
Other Charlotte-area state champions were Providence Day sophomore Granger Bartee (100 backstroke) and Charlotte Country Day juniors Charlie O’Shea (100 breaststroke) and Freddy Klein (200 individual medley).
Cary Academy’s Jerry Fox repeated as state champion in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Girls’ meet
Charlotte Country Day finished second in the team scoring, despite not winning an event. The Buccaneers had second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke, and 400 freestyle relay.
Metrolina Christian’s Caitlyn Cornell repeated as state champion in the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle.
Providence Day freshman Zetta Grace Bartee had a spectacular meet, winning the 200 freestyule and 100 butterfly. She won the 100 butterfly by nearly two seconds.

Division 2 meet
Asheville School swept the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Hickory Grove Christian finished 13th in the boys’ meet, with SouthLake Christian 14th and Gaston Christian 16th. SouthLake Christian was 10th in the girls’ meet, with Gaston Christian 11th and Hickory Grove Christian 18th.
SouthLake Christian’s Alli Wilson was fourth in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle. Hickory Grove Christian’s Morgan Donald was fifth in the 200 individual medley. And Gaston Christian’s Seth Robinson swam fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
Division 3 meet
O’Neal School won the boys’ team title, and Caldwell Academy topped the girls’ field.
But there were five Observer-area champions.
Davidson Day finished third in the girls’ competition, with University Christian fourth. Gaston Day was fourth and University Christian fifth in the boys’ meet. Davidson Day took eighth place.
Gaston Day’s Bree Smith won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Davidson Day’s Matthew Doty won the 100 backstroke and teamed with Roger Philipp, Alec Loh and Gavin Conroy to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Also winning a state championship was University Christian’s Sean Kelty, in the 200 individual medley.
