Readers’ choices for high school boys basketball players of the year

In late February, The Observer asked readers to name their boys high school basketball players of the year, voting for the top public school players in Mecklenburg County, in the Charlotte region and the area’s top private school players.

The winners are:

Central Academy’s Jake Shearin (regional public). A senior, Shearin boosted averages from 17.4 to 22.3 this season, also got 8.8 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game.

North Hills Christian’s Champion Hayden (private). The Rowan County star averaging 21.1 points, 11 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

Butler’s Zion McDuffie (Mecklenburg public). The high-jumping win averaging 17.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, three steals, three blocks and two assists per game.

NOTE: These are the results of a vote among readers and do not represent The Observer’s annual All-Observer team which will appear in a few weeks.
