Central Cabarrus boys advance to 3A state title game with win vs. West Charlotte
Central Cabarrus’ boys basketball team wasn’t about to let history repeat itself.
On Saturday afternoon, the Vikings dominated West Charlotte, 78-51, in an NCHSAA 3A regional final to advance to the state championship. West Charlotte eliminated Central Cabarrus from the playoffs last year.
“We came out here a season ago way too tight,” Vikings coach Jim Baker said. “We had our minds set on this game for 365 days. Sometimes, getting your tail kicked is the best thing that can happen to you.”
Added shooting guard Gavin Bullock: “We had a lot of motivation going into this game.”
Central Cabarrus (31-0) maintained its trademark fast pace all game long. The Vikings’ style of play made it difficult for the Lions (15-14).
Baker was pleased with his team’s effort.
“These guys have been a pleasure to coach, and they will flat-out get after you,” he said.
Central Cabarrus has played a tough schedule this season, defeating a number of teams ranked highly in the RPI rankings.
“We played Gaston Day, United Faith, Concord Academy and Charlotte Catholic,” Baker explained. “So, we’ve been tested.”
The Vikings also beat Lake Norman and Cox Mill, the top two teams in the Greater Metro 4A Conference.
“It doesn’t matter who we play,” Baker said. “We are going to get after it. We have a few sets in place, and I’ll make a few adjustments. But, it’s our system and it fits (the players) personality.”
Three who made a difference
Chase Daniel, Central Cabarrus: He’s quick and composed while leading the offensive but also excels as a pest on defense, forcing the ball out of opponents’ hands.
Jaiden Thompson, Central Cabarrus: Thompson played strong defensively and finished with 19 points.
Chadlyn Traylor, West Charlotte: Traylor finished with 10 points and helped the Lions force a few turnovers.
