Myers Park Mustangs win Observer’s 2022-23 Sweet 16 boys basketball championship

The Myers Park Mustangs are the Observer’s 2022-23 Sweet 16 boys basketball champions. Myers Park will receive its first banner for boys basketball.

The Mustangs’ girls basketball team won two banners after winning state championships in 2013 and 2014. This season, however, Myers Park won its first boys state basketball championship since the school opened in 1951.

Myers Park’s boys won 15 straight games to end the season following a 52-51 loss at Carmel Christian on Jan. 14 in the Mecklenburg County regular-season game of the year.

Carmel Christian (28-4) fell from the top spot after losing to Christ School in the NCISAA 4A state championship game. That allowed Myers Park to move up from No. 2. Central Cabarrus (31-0), which won its first state title since 2000, moved up one spot to No. 2. Central finished No. 1 in the statewide 3A rankings.

Carmel finished third in The Sweet 16.

This season, Myers Park finished No. 1 in the statewide 4A poll, won the Arby’s Classic holiday tournament in Tennessee, and the Mustangs were SoMECK 4A regular-season and tournament champions. In the playoffs, the Mustangs won six games by an average of 32.5 points.
