There’s a new No. 1 in this week’s Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll.

Hough (11-2) beat former No. 1 South Meck at home Friday and jumped two spots to the top of the poll. South Mecklenburg to No. 5.

The Huskies, who have won five games, were scheduled to play Lincoln Charter (7-2) at home Wednesday.

There are two new teams in the poll this week: No. 13 Cannon School (5-2), which has five of six games, and Providence is also in this week’s poll.

The Panthers, reigning N.C. 4A state champs, are No. 16 in this week’s poll. After a 2-3 start, Providence has won three of four games, heading into Wednesday’s scheduled home game with Lake Norman.

The Sweet 16 ranks the 104 schools in The Charlotte Observer’s coverage zone, which includes Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union Counties. The poll considers strength of schedule, strength of class and team performance.
