CABARRUS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hickory Ridge swept the boys’ and girls’ team championships in the annual meet, held this year at West Cabarrus High.

In the boys’ competition, Hickory Ridge’s Khareem Thompson won the long jump and triple jump, and Joshua Clark of West Cabarrus took the 110-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

Boys’ team scores: Hickory Ridge 188; West Cabarrus 135.5; A.L. Brown 82.5; Cox Mill 79; Northwest Cabarrus 67; Jay M. Robinson 58; Concord 52.5; Central Cabarrus 28.5; Mount Pleasant 5.

In the girls’ competition, Hickory Ridge’s Alesia Silvertain swept the shot put and discus. Other double-winners were Central Cabarrus’ Sydney Krauss (100 hurdles and triple jump; second in 100 meters); Robinson’s Coryn Tucker (400 meters, 200 meters, third in 100 meters); and Cox Mill’s Zaiyon Evans (100 meters, 200 meters).

Six athletes had big meets in the Friday Night Lights meet at Providence High. Team scores were not kept.

Boys’ standouts: Ardrey Kell’s Xavier Branker (first in 110-meter hurdles and 400 meters) and Berry Academy’s Nolan Maske (first in high jump, second in long jump).

Girls’ standouts: Ardrey Kell’s Tyler Glover (first in discus and shot put); Myers Park’s Aria Wegh (first in high jump and 300 hurdles, third in 100 meters); Providence’s Keely Bradle (first in 3,200 meters, ran on first-place 4-by-800 relay team); and North Mecklenburg’s Sahlay Reid (first in long jump and triple jump).

Lake Norman Charter 11, Concord 4: Grady White drove in five runs for the victors, while Gabriel Bibby had two hits and scored twice for Conciord.

Lincoln Charter 14, Community School of Davidson 6: Senior Matt Cipriano had a big day for the Eagles, smacking a double and a home run and driving in six runs. In 17 games this spring, he is hitting .500, with six homers and 34 RBIs.

Cherryville 13, Highland Tech 3: Cherryville’s Kanon Willis and Tobin Miller each drove in three runs.

Charlotte Christian 10, Lexington (SC) 0: The Knights won easily, but the big story here was the dedication of the school’s baseball field in the name of Greg Simmons, the school’s late baseball coach. Simmons died earlier this year of cancer.

Charlotte Country Day 7, Carmel Christian 4: Winning pitcher Alex Steeler tossed three two-hit innings, and James Lowe went 4-for-4 with a home run. Carmel Christian’s Griffin Brooks had two hits and an RBI.

East Forsyth 14, Hough 8: East Forsyth, ranked near the top in most 4A state polls, scored five runs on wild pitches and pulled away from the Huskies in the later innings.

Garinger 18, Monroe 17: What happens when two winless teams meet? In this case, you get a thriller. Garinger (1-17) rallied after trailing 15-6 after 4½ innings. Gershom Kotay and Jeremiah Stallings each scored three runs for the victors. Davin Davis drove in four runs for Monroe (0-14).

Hickory Ridge 11, Olympic 4

Metrolina Christian 4, Covenant Day 4: Carter Helein had two hits and two RBI for Metrolina, while Hudson Shoudy drove in two runs for Covenant Day.

Track and field

Ardrey Kell meet: The host Knights won both the boys’ and girls’ competition. Chance Bryant won the 100-meter dash and the long jump for Ardrey Kell, while Berry Academy’s La’Savion Kinard took the 400 meters and was second in the 200 meters. Providence’s Devin Coleman swept the shot put and discus.

Boys’ team scores: Ardrey Kell 136, Providence 93, Berry Academy 62, East Mecklenburg 57, Palisades 17.

In the girls’ competition, Ardrey Kell’s Molly Marshall took the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was second in the long jump. Teammate Zoe Cousin won the 100 hurdles and long jump.

Gaston Day 24, Spartanburg Day 12: Jason Johnson homered and drove in six runs for Gaston Day, and Brody Smith added two doubles.

Independence 15, West Charlotte 3: The Patriots’ Will Perry got the victory on the mound.

Mountain Island Charter 5, Piedmont Community Charter 1: The Raptors won behind two hits, two stolen bases and an RBI by Jack Ostendorf.

Covenant Day 4, Providence Day 2: The Lions, perhaps the area’s youngest varsity softball team, moved into a second-place tie with Charlotte Christian (each is 3-1), as Charlotte Hall drove in two runs. Covenant Day’s starting lineup features four seventh-graders and five freshmen.

Monroe 30, Garinger 15: The Redhawks won their first game in at least 15 years, capturing this slugfest. Accurate records date back to 2008, and Monroe had not won a varsity softball game in that time – until Monday.

Sun Valley 23, Forest Hills 2: Twin sisters Georgia and Katie Beijan led the Spartans, with each collecting three hits and three RBI. Georgia Beijan had two triples.
