LACROSSE TEAMS WRAP UP REGULAR-SEASON
North Carolina’s public school lacrosse teams finished their regular seasons Thursday night, with Ardrey Kell, Community School of Davidson and Marvin Ridge scoring big victories in boys’ matches.
Weddington downed a neighborhood rival in a key girls’ game.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association is scheduled to release brackets Friday for the lacrosse state playoffs, which begin early next week.
The state’s private schools have one week remaining in their regular seasons.

Cannon School 13, Lake Norman 6: This was a meeting of the state’s No. 1-ranked teams, and the Cougars, ranked atop the private school poll, dominated. They improved to 15-3 on the season. Lake Norman, ranked No. 1 in 4A by Maxpreps, fell to 18-3.
Community School of Davidson 11, Christ the King 7: The visiting Spartans prevailed in this meeting of teams expected to contend for the small schools’ state crown.

Wednesday’s Rewind
Wednesday night’s meeting of two southeast Charlotte girls’ soccer powers was close – for a half.
But host Ardrey Kell broke loose with five second-half goals and blanked Providence 5-0 in a nonconference match.
The Knights (15-3-1), ranked 17th in the state overall this week by Maxpreps, got three goals from Taylor Suarez. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Caroline McSweeney made six saves in earning the clean sheet.
Providence, ranked 27th overall in the state by Maxpreps, fell to 13-3-1 on the season.

Lincolnton’s Piero Rovalino won Catawba Valley 2A Player of the Year honors Wednesday after downing Maiden’s Cooper Houser 6-1, 6-3 in the singles finals of the conference tournament.
The doubles title was won by Josh Cross and Jeremiah Cockman of Bandys.
Regional tournament qualifiers from the conference include Rovalino and West Lincoln’s David Hoyle in singles; and the West Lincoln tandem of Lincoln Clayville and Grayson Kiser in doubles.
Bandys, the regular-season champion, also took team tournament honors. Following were Maiden, Bunker Hill, West Lincoln, Lincolnton, Newton-Conover, East Burke and West Caldwell.

Providence Day soccer closes in on title
Providence Day took a big step toward capturing the CISAA girls’ soccer championship Tuesday, blanking host Charlotte Latin 2-0.
The Chargers, now 6-0 in conference play, got goals from Reilly Brinley and Devin McElroy. Goalkeeper Chandler Brooks made six saves for the shutout.
Charlotte Latin fell to 4-2 in CISAA play. The Hawks lost 2-1 at Providence Day earlier this month.
Each team has four conference matches remaining.

Basketball
Alexander Central High has stayed in-house for a new boys’ basketball coach. Cam Gant, a former Cougar player and assistant coach the past eight seasons, will become head coach. He replaces Ed Wills, who is resigning after 19 seasons at the helm.
Gant is a 2012 Alexander Central graduate. He was boys’ junior varsity coach the past eight seasons and also has been an assistant coach at the school with the football and the track and field teams.
