HS Update: Myers Park baseball advances to Elite 8, Tuesday’s NCHSAA playoff scores
Myers Park’s baseball team is heading back to the Elite 8.
The Mustangs, who reached the 4A state quarterfinals last season, beat Cuthbertson 2-1 Tuesday night in a third-round game.
Pitcher Luke McGrath threw seven innings and allowed one hit. He struck out nine and walked one.
But the Mustangs (23-5) were the only Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools team to advance.
Reigning state 4A champion Providence lost 8-6 at Northern Guilford in a rain-shortened game. And Hopewell fell to powerhouse and top seed T.C. Roberson 13-1.
Roberson will host Myers Park in the state quarterfinals Friday.
Providence battled back early in the game but fell short.
The Panthers, down 1-0 early, scored three times in the top of the third for a 3-1 lead. But the Vikings responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and led 6-3.
Northwest Guilford led 8-4 entering the top of the sixth, but Providence erupted for two runs and had the bases loaded before Viking reliever Dominic Azarello entered the game and got the third out.
Shortly afterward, a thunderstorm arrived, and the game eventually was called.
Here’s how other Charlotte-area teams fared in Tuesday N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff action:
#BIG5 Top Performers
Morgan Banks, Charlotte Christian softball: tossed a 12-strikeout, three-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over North Raleigh Christian in the NCISAA semifinals.
Anna Dew, Hickory Ridge softball: struck out 11 and tossed a two-hitter in a 8-0 win over Ardrey Kell.
Lexi Kirby, Marvin Ridge softball: tied a state playoff record with three home runs in a 11-1 win over Cuthbertson.
Luke McGrath, Myers Park baseball: threw seven innings of one-hit ball in a 2-1 win over Cuthbertson to send his team to back-to-back Elite 8s in NCHSAA 4A ball.
Bo Ziegler, Providence Day baseball: pitched a four-hit shutout in the Chargers’ 5-0 win over Covenant Day in the NCISAA 4A baseball semifinals. Providence Day will try to win its first state title since 1998
Baseball
North Iredell stunned top-seeded 5-4 in the 3A playoffs. Hunter Baldwin led the Raiders (15-11) with a two-run home run. He also scored twice.
Other games involving area teams – Lincoln Charter in 2A; Union Academy, Cherryville and Highland Tech in 1A – were postponed to Wednesday evening.
Softball
Ardrey Kell’s season ended with an 8-0 loss at top-seeded Hickory Ridge, and Marvin Ridge advanced with an 11-1 drubbing of local rival Cuthbertson.
Hickory Ridge (23-2) hosts Northwest Guilford in a 4A quarterfinal Friday. While Marvin Ridge faces the winner of the South Caldwell-Alexander Central game, which was halted by rain in the top of the seventh Tuesday and will be finished Wednesday. The game was tied 5-5.
Hickory Ridge standout Anna Dew tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11. Kristyn Embler doubled and drove in four runs. Dew reached the 200-strikeout plateau for the season and has fanned more than 500 in her career.
Marvin Ridge had a sensational performance from Lexi Kirby, who tied a state playoff record by slamming three home runs.
East Lincoln advanced in 3A by downing host West Rowan 5-3. Jaelyn Freeston and Taniyah Thomas each homered for the Mustangs (20-1), who will travel to top-seeded Enka (23-0) in a Friday quarterfinal game.
Boys’ lacrosse
The Charlotte Catholic-Lake Norman 4A semifinal was postponed due to thunderstorm activity. It will be played Wednesday evening.
But Lake Norman Charter trounced Bishop McGuinness 19-4 in the 1A-2A-3A semifinal. The Knights will face Northwood in the state championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Durham County Stadium.
The Charlotte Catholic-Lake Norman victor will face Cardinal Gibbons at 8 p.m. Friday at Durham County Stadium for the state title.
Girls’ lacrosse
Charlotte Catholic downed Myers Park 14-6 in the 4A semifinals, advancing to the state championship game this weekend. The Cougars will face Cardinal Gibbons in the championship game, set for 5 p.m. Friday at Durham County Stadium.
