HS Rewind: Myers Park baseball falls, Providence Day baseball, Cannon softball pull upsets
The last Mecklenburg County public school baseball team was eliminated from the playoffs Friday night, but the county has two teams playing for N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships Saturday.
And several Charlotte-area softball teams remained alive in the playoffs.
Some highlights:
▪ Myers Park, the last public school 4A baseball playoff survivor from Mecklenburg County, dropped a 6-3 decision at top-seeded T.C. Roberson. The Mustangs finished with a 23-6 record.
▪ Providence Day went on the road to High Point Wesleyan and posted a 2-1 victory in Game 1 of the best-of-3 NCISAA 4A baseball series. Wesleyan was the No. 1 seed and had beaten Providence Day 10-2 in the teams’ only previous meeting this season.
▪ Hickory Grove Christian also won Game 1 of its baseball series, beating host High Point Christian in a 3A contest.
▪ In the NCHSAA softball playoffs, Marvin Ridge and Hickory Ridge posted victories and will meet in the 4A West Regional best-of-3 championship series next week. East Lincoln (3A) and Union Academy (1A) also advanced to regional finals.
▪ And second-seeded Cannon School trounced defending state champion and top seed Charlotte Christian in Game 1 of the 4A NCISAA softball finals. Cannon School hit three home runs and is trying to deny Christian a third straight title.
