Hickory Grove baseball, Cannon lacrosse, Davidson Day soccer, tennis win NCISAA state

In the NCISAA baseball finals, Hickory Grove Christian captured the 3A championship, while Providence Day’s bats went silent and the Chargers fell in the 4A finals.

And Hickory Grove Christian was swept in the 3A softball finals.

In girls’ soccer, Davidson Day joined Charlotte Latin as Mecklenburg’s NCISAA state champions, as the Patriots took the 2A title in a shootout.

Cannon School, which lost by 2-games-to-1 to Charlotte Christian in the 2021 and 2022 4A softball championship series, completed a two-game sweep of the Knights on Saturday, winning Game 2 by a 3-1 score.

Brie Biddle slammed a two-run home run in the second inning and finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Winning pitcher Maddie Sturgill scattered four hits and struck out nine.

Charlotte Christian pitcher Morgan Banks also tossed a four-hitter but had seven walks.

Cannon School (20-3) beat Providence Day (18-6) in the NCISAA Division I lacrosse finals. Cannon won 20-4 and completed a playoff run when it beat opponents 17-4, 17-3 and 20-4.

Providence Day stunned host and top seed High Point Wesleyan on Friday in Game 1 of the 4A baseball series, but the Chargers were blanked 9-0 and 5-0 Saturday.

In the first of Saturday’s games, Wesleyan’s Hudson Lance pitched a two-hitter and helped his cause with two triples and an RBI.

In the deciding third game of the series, Grayson McDonald fired a four-hitter for Wesleyan, limiting the Chargers to four singles. Starter Jake Jeffries took the loss. Reliever Tyler Nee pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.

Hickory Grove Christian took the 3A baseball title, but the Lions needed three games. They won the series opener Friday, but fell 13-3 in Game 2 Saturday before capturing the rubber match by a 5-1 score.

In Game 2, senior Carson Cabbage drove in two runs. In Game 3, sophomore Davis Cabbage fired a three-hitter and struck out 10. His older brother, Carson, homered. And Trig Browning had two hits.

Hickory Grove Christian’s softball team was swept in two games by High Point Christian in the 3A finals. In Saturday’s 14-2 loss, Hailey Allred led the victors with a triple and home run. She drove in three runs.

And in soccer, Davidson Day beat Sanford Grace Christian in a shootout for the 2A championship. The teams were tied 2-2 after regulation and overtime, but Davidson Day won 3-2 on penalty kicks.

Davidson Day also captured a state championship Saturday in boys’ tennis. The Patriots trounced Carolina Day 5-1.
