Union County avalanche! Cuthbertson, Weddington win NCHSAA 4A track championships

It was a Union County kind of day at the NCHSAA 2A and 4A state championships at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.

Cuthbertson’s girls ran away from the field, beating Parkland Magnet by 20 points, and Weddington’s boys edged Mallard Creek -- by just two points -- to take title.

In the 2A finals, High Point Andrews won the boys title and Burlington Cummings took the girls.

Some highlights:

Weddington’s boys took a close race. Besides Mallard Creek just two points back, third place Clayton was three back and Cuthbertson was fourth.

The Warriors earned lots of points in the field events. Senior Ryan Davis won the pole vault and teammate Eli Clark was second. Juniors Christopher Stewart and Kolton Weaver were second and third in the shot put. Stewart was fifth in the discus.

Weddington’s relay team of Ian Mas, Dallin Starkie, Hunter Bates and Caden Townshend finished second in the 3,200 relay and earned eight more points.

Mallard Creek’s Curtis Clark, Benjamin Black, Jayden Lee, Christian Dixon and Darren Morrison combined to set new meet records in both the 400- and 800-relays to score 20 points.

Marvin Ridge junior Adam Ridge won the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes in the wheelchair division.

Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney won the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs and shaved nearly two seconds off the 3,200-meter meet record.

Jacob Laney from Porter Ridger set a new meet record in the 3200 Meter Run by nearly two seconds and also took first in the 1600.

Cuthbertson’s girls won their third straight championship and second in 4A in dominating fashion.

Cavalier juniors Charlotte Bell, Stella Kermes and Justine Preisano led the way. They took first, third and fourth in the 800-meter Run. They took first, second and eighth in the 1,600 Meter; and the Cavaliers starrted teamed up with Josie Schihi to set a new meet record in the 3,200.

Bell also set a new meet record in the 1,600.

Myers Park junior Mary Bonner Dalton ran the 3,200 Meter in 10:08.64 to beat the old 4A meet record by nine seconds.
