North Meck baseball coach Andrew Martin heading to Iredell County alma mater
Former North Mecklenburg coach Andrew Martin is taking the head baseball coaching job at Mooresville High School.
Martin played at Mooresville from 2015-2019, when he was a first baseman and pitcher. He was part of the Blue Devils’ 2019 N.C. 4A state championship team before he left for Montreat College. Martin later graduated from Catawba College.
“First off, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity,” Martin said. “When you think about the pride that Mooresville has, it is just really special to be back home where I played my high school days. I am really thankful for the opportunity.”
Martin is replacing longtime coach Jeff Burchett, who coached Martin in high school.
“I have played for Jeff (Burchett) since I was eight years old,” Martin said. “So, I have really known him basically my whole life. The legacy that he is leaving behind is special, and I hope that I can just continue that the best that I can. It is an honor to be following him, and I definitely have big shoes to fill. I really just want to continue to build upon what he has set in place.”
At North Mecklenburg, Martin led the Vikings to their first .500 season in nine years, helping shift their program back in the right direction. Martin has coached some collegiate summer baseball teams. He thinks those experiences have him ready to take over in Iredell County.
Next spring, he’ll take over a Blue Devils team coming off a 13-12 season with a 6-6 Greater Metro Conference record.
“I am super thankful for North (Mecklenburg),” Martin said. “The players there worked so hard, and it is nothing that I did. It was truly the players and the effort that they put forward every day that made us able to have success, and I am thankful for my time there. They took a shot on a young coach and I couldn’t be more thankful for that.”
