NC statewide high school football rankings: 9 new teams join the polls this week

Nine new teams join the North Carolina high school football rankings this week.

The rankings are done by longtime North Carolina high school sports expert Chris Hughes for The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh. The rankings are broken down by class for N.C. High School Athletic Association (mostly) public school teams, and there are two private school polls, for eight- and 11-man football, that include all NCISAA schools combined into one poll.

Some notes:

No changes in the 11-man private school poll and this week’s biggest game is No. 1 Providence Day visiting No. 8 Christ School. In the eight-man poll, Pungo Christian (3-1) is in at No. 7.

A pair of unbeaten 5-0 teams, Starmount and Northampton County, move into the NCHSAA 1A poll.

A pair of 4-0 unbeaten western NC teams, Bunker Hill and West Lincoln, are into the 2A poll.

In 3A, Hickory (4-0) is in after ending reigning state champion East Lincoln’s 19-game win streak Friday. West Henderson (5-0) is also in. Every ranked team is unbeaten in the 3A rankings.

In 4A, unbeaten New Bern and Mooresville join the rankings.
