Two days after making history, Sun Valley joins The Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll

Sun Valley made history this weekend. Today, the Spartans join the region’s oldest high school football poll.

Sun Valley beat Union County rival Cuthbertson 7-0 on Friday to improve to 7-0 for the first time in school history. The Spartans moved into The Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll at No. 14. Seven of the 16 ranked teams are unbeaten.

Another Union County team, Porter Ridge (5-1), also joined the poll this week. The Pirates beat Marvin Ridge 35-10 on Friday and have a showdown with No. 4 Weddington next week.

No other teams made major moves this week. Butler (6-1) won its sixth straight game Friday, beating East Mecklenburg 58-0. The Bulldogs jumped over West Charlotte for second place. West Charlotte (6-0) beat Hopewell 56-20 on Friday.
