One new team is in The Observer’s Sweet 16 this week.

West Lincoln (8-1) won its third straight game Friday and joined the region’s oldest high school football poll. The Observer began The Sweet 16 in 1983. This year, the rankings are sponsored by Deer Park Water.

Elsewhere, Providence Day (8-1) maintained its top spot despite a 42-27 loss to nationally ranked Rabun Gap (GA) Friday. Heading into the game, MaxPreps ranked those two schools at the top of its rankings of teams that played in N.C. leagues, private or public. Rabun Gap has played in the N.C. Independent Schools leagues for many years.
