Providence Day, Davidson Day sweep NCISAA state cross-country titles
Providence Day and Davidson Day each swept boys’ and girls’ team championships Friday in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s cross-country state meet in Cary.
The meet was run at the WakeMed Soccer Complex Course.
Providence Day easily took the girls’ 4A title and edged Charlotte Country Day and Christ School in a tight battle for the boys’ championship.
Davidson Day edged Hickory Christian for the 2A girls’ championship and Carolina Day for the 2A boys’ crown.
Here is a look at how the various divisions finished:
4A Girls: Providence Day (41), Charlotte Country Day (83), Charlotte Latin (94), Metrolina Christian (123) and Covenant Day (127) finished 1 through 5.
Providence Day senior Morgan Boonshaft was the individual champion. Her time of 17 minutes 34.6 seconds on the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course was 38 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Teammates Carly Arrington (a senior) and Blane McElroy (a junior) were fourth and fifth. Metrolina Christian junior Annie Miller finished second, with Covenant Day freshman Caitlin Kasten running third.
4A Boys: Providence Day (87) edged Charlotte Country Day (90) and Christ School (91) for the title, with Covenant Day (105) fourth and Cary Academy (109) fifth.
North Raleigh Christian senior Tyler Surface won the individual title with a time of 15:21.5. Covenant Day senior Colden Welsh, who ran fourth, was the only Charlotte-area runner in the top five.
Providence Day’s top three finishers were senior Zack Makemson (12th), junior Austin Skeete (14th) and senior Anderson Shire (17th).
2A Girls: Davidson Day (108) won comfortably over runner-up Hickory Christian (149). Carolina Barton, a Carolina Day junior, won the individual race. Top area finishers were Davidson Day senior Sophie Ratcliff (fourth) and senior Gracie Redmond (18th).
2A Boys: Davidson Day (92) beat runner-up Carolina Day (117) for the crown. Caldwell Academy sophomore Hunter Riffey won the individual title. Davidson Day’s leaders were sophomore Edward Haponik (sixth), junior Matthew Doty (ninth) and senior Zachary Gildin (12th).
3A Girls: Cary Christian took the team title, and 12th-place SouthLake Christian was the top area finisher. Individual champion was Asheville School senior Abby Smith. SouthLake eighth-grader Kristen Nohr ran 15th.
3A Boys: Forsyth Country Day took the team and individual titles, with sophomore George Lawson topping the field. Hickory Grove Christian finished sixth, and the Lions’ Gavin Murphy was the top area finisher, in 10th.
1A Girls: Lee Christian was team champion.
1A Boys: Oakwood School took the team title, but Victory Christian sophomore Jayden Chapman won the individual state championship.
Mustang tennis players advance
Myers Park sophomore Teagan Reilly is among a group of eight singles players or double teams advancing to the second day of play Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s girls’ individual tennis championships.
Reilly won a pair of straight-set victories Friday and will face Broughton’s Allison Harris in the semifinals Saturday morning. Reilly reached the semifinals last year before losing.
The Mustangs also will have a doubles team, Ann Mason Moore and Agnes Shinn, playing in the semis Saturday. They will face the Leesville Road team of Mia Carliana and Diana Higgins.

4A Doubles: A sisters match is set in the other semifinal at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh. Marvin Ridge’s Jeslyn and Eleri Pratiknjo will face Apex Friendship’s Julianne and Carolyn Izod.
3A Singles: Lake Norman Charter’s Luci Falls and Forestview’s Rennie Liu have reached the singles semifinals at the Burlington Tennis Center. Falls will face Rocky Mount’s McKinley Battle on Saturday, while Liu faces Carrboro’s Emma Shriver.
3A Doubles: Lake Norman Charter’s Ainslee Falls and Elena Moon will play Terry Sanford’s Pauline Bui and Loren Galaviz in a Saturday morning semifinal.
2A Singles: Community School of Davidson’s Jadan Rounds has reached the semifinals at Ting Park in Holly Springs. She’ll face Anna Katherine Medlin of Greene Central.
1A Singles: Highland Tech’s Katelin Vaher has reached the championship match, where she’ll face Manya Nallagangu of N.C. School of Science & Math/Morganton. Vaher defeated Highland Tech teammate Madison Darnell in the semifinals.
