Charlotte, Raleigh-area high schools on collision course in NCHSAA soccer playoffs

South Mecklenburg’s crazy journey through the NCHSAA 4A playoffs continued Thursday night.

The Sabres, a No. 24 seed, stopped No. 5 Ardrey Kell 4-2 on penalty kicks. South Mecklenburg advanced to Tuesday’s N.C. 4A Western Regional championship game, or state semifinals, at Hickory Ridge.

Hickory Ridge won its fourth straight game, beating Weddington 2-1 in its state quarterfinal. Hickory Ridge will host next week’s regional championship game and try to advance to its first state final.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will face a Raleigh-area team.

Cardinal Gibbons shut out Leesville Road 2-0 Thursday and Apex Friendship beat Chapel Hill, 2-1.

Apex Friendship will play at Gibbons in the 4A Eastern Regional final.
