Independence RB Jayden Jones is The Observer’s high school offensive player of the week

Independence High School running back Jayden Jones is The Charlotte Observer high school football offensive player of the week.

Jones, a sophomore running back, ran 12 times for 156 yards in a 35-0 win against Lake Norman in the first round of the NC 4A playoffs last week. Jones averaged 13 yards per attempt.

Last week’s other nominees

Landen Agee, North Lincoln: The freshman ran 15 times for 258 yards and five touchdowns in a 50-7 win against Rockingham County on Friday. Coming into the game, he had played in six games with 32 carries for 157 yards and one score.

Trey Blakeney, Hough: In a 51-0 win against Asheville, Blakeney completed 16-of-20 passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns.

Jadyn Davis, Providence Day: In a 57-14 win against Metrolina Christian, Davis completed 12 of 14 passes for 249 yards and five touchdowns, finding receiver Jaylen Himes for 104 yards and four touchdowns on six passes.

Christian Dixon, Mallard Creek: In a 41-7 win against Marvin Ridge on Friday, Dixon ran 12 times for 155 yards and three touchdowns.

Brady Hibbard, Forest Hills: In a 28-7 win against Anson County, Hibbard completed 16 of 27 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns. He connected with Ross Smith eight times for 114 yards and a score.

Jaden Marshall, Chambers: In a 45-20 win against Northwest Guilford, the junior quarterback — starting in place of Tre’ Robinson — completed 13 of 19 passes for 330 yards and four touchdowns.

Jacob Monsour, Mooresville: Monsour’s field goal late in regulation forced overtime at AL Brown and helped unbeaten Mooresville avoid a big upset. The Blue Devils won 24-18 in overtime.

Anthony Smith, Bessemer City: He ran 22 times for 277 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-22 win against South Stanly.

Charlie Smith, Charlotte Catholic: In a 42-24 upset victory against Myers Park, a win that ended the Mustangs’ seven-game win streak, Smith completed 12-of-14 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns. He led his team to a 403-yard night.

Jaylin Winnex, West Lincoln: In a 53-35 win against Chase, Winnex ran 14 times or 133 yards and four scores. He also had 52-yard kickoff return and three tackles on defense.
