Four new teams join The Observer Sweet 16 boys’ and girls’ high school basketball polls

There are four new boys’ and girls’ basketball teams in this week’s Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 polls.

The Sweet 16, which began in the 1984-85 season, is the region’s oldest high school poll and ranks the top teams in the newspaper’s coverage area that includes schools in the following counties: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Union, York and Lancaster.

Rankings are based on the following: strength of schedule, the overall strength of a classification, team success within that classification, and head-to-head competition between teams ranked in the Sweet 16. It does not consider how ranked teams would fare against each other — or other unranked teams — unless those teams actually meet.

The Sweet 16 champions, named at the end of the season, will get a banner to hang in the school’s gym.

There’s one new team in the boys’ poll: Charlotte Country Day is off to an 8-0 start after a pair of wins on the weekend. The Bucs, coached by former Providence Day state champion David Carrier, have games this week with 1-4 Legion Collegiate (Tuesday), 4-0 Cox Mill (Friday) and No. 9 Victory Christian Saturday. The Kings are 8-2.

There are three new girls’ teams: No. 12 Ardrey Kell, No. 13 Hough and No. 14 Hickory Ridge.

All three teams are off to strong starts, with just one loss each.
