Meet the 2023 All-Observer high school girls’ field hockey honorees

Covenant Day’s Emily Eaton and Myers Park’s Lucy Curtis are The Observer’s 2023 field hockey athletes of the year.

Eaton is the offensive player of the year after the all-state midfielder scored 18 goals, earning CISAA conference player of the year, all-region and all-state honors.

Eaton was one of three players from the state to be invited to try out of the U.S. U18 National team at UNC Charlotte.

Eaton will continue her academic and field hockey career at the University of Louisville.

Curtis is the defensive player of the year. The junior all-state goalkeeper was an all-South region pick and she won the Charlotte Metro conference defensive player of the year honors with 11 shutouts, while allowing just 16 goals in 20 games.

In two seasons, Curtis has 26 shutouts while allowing only 24 goals. The Ohio State commit has one year left at Myers Park.

Charlotte Country Day’s Kayleigh Ferlan is coach of the year after leading the Buccaneers (15-5) to the NCISAA state championship.

Ferlan guided Charlotte Country Day to their third state title in the last five years.

The Buccaneers allowed just one goals in three playoff wins, including a 2-0 shutout of Cary Christian in the NCISAA state championship game.

First Team

FORWARDS

Morgan Bleakney, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ second-team all-state pick scored 14 goals this season.

Gracie Kaspar, Providence Day: The Washington & Lee University commit, a senior forward, led the Chargers with 15 goals. Kaspar also had nine assists this season.

Margaret Scheurer, Charlotte Country Day: The Buccaneers’ all-state senior forward, a University of Richmond commit, led the Charlotte Country Day offense with 16 goals and 10 assists.

Meg Tebben, Charlotte Catholic: The Cougars’ all-state sophomore led Charlotte Catholic with 24 goals and 13 assists.

Kemp Walters, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ junior all-state forward, the Charlotte Metro conference offensive player of the year, led Myers Park with 27 goals. She has 56 scores in the last two years.

Amelia Wagner, Marvin Ridge: The Mavericks’ senior, a Virginia Commonwealth University commit led the state in goals and total points with 33 goals, seven assists.

MIDFIELDERS

Molly Brown, Charlotte Country Day: The Buccaneers’ sophomore midfielder had three goals, three assists for the NCISAA state champions this season.

Emily Eaton, Covenant Day: The Lions’ all-state senior, a University of Louisville commit, had 18 of her team’s 24 goals this season.

Avery Gurley, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ senior had 11 goals and 11 assists this season. She has 27 goals, 17 assists in the last two years.

Addison Harrill, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ second-team all-state senior midfielder had four goals, 11 assists.

Kadence Johnson, Charlotte Latin: The Hawks’ all-state performer led the Hawks with nine goals, 14 assists, six defensive saves this season.

Elle Louise Kocmond, Providence Day: The Chargers’ all-state midfielder, a University of California-Davis commit, had four goals, 12 assists and five defensive saves.

Ellie Wilkins, Charlotte Country Day: The Buccaneers’ all-state defensive midfielder, a Tufts University commit also had five goals, seven assists this season.

DEFENDERS

Alicia Edwards, Charlotte Latin: The Hawks’ all-state defender had six defensive saves for Charlotte Latin this season.

Molly Haskell, Charlotte Catholic: The Cougars’ senior, a Sewanee commit, helped change Charlotte Catholic’s season when she moved to center back. Haskell had five goals, two assists this season.

Ardyn Henry, Charlotte Latin: The Hawks’ all-state defender also contributed on offensive with seven goals and eight assists this season.

Kenna White, Providence Day: The Chargers’ all-state defender, a Hamilton College commit, had two defensive saves this season.

GOALKEEPERS

Lucy Curtis, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ all-state junior, an Ohio State commit had 11 shutouts, allowing just 16 goals. Curtis played every minute of every game for Myers Park this season.

Lucy Pigg, Providence: The Panthers’ sophomore had 124 saves for Providence this season.

Charley Vanderstock, Marvin Ridge: The Mavericks’ senior, a University of North Carolina commit, had 11 shutouts, earned 15 wins and saved 88.7 of the shots on goal this season.
