Friday’s girls’ basketball rewind: Porter Ridge gets revenge, beats Ardrey Kell in finals

Porter Ridge claimed the 2023 Hickory Tavern/Chick-fil-A Classic girls’ championship Friday with a 56-53 win over Ardrey Kell. The tournament was played at Ardrey Kell.

Porter Ridge freshman guard Ashanti Taylor had a great game for the Pirates, scoring 21 points despite fouling out in the fourth quarter.

“I feel like I had a good game,” Taylor said. “I really kept my momentum and really pushed through it.”

Taylor felt as if a Dec. 5 loss to Ardrey Kell gave the team the momentum they needed to get over the edge in this game.

“I felt like we could have beaten them in the first game,” Taylor said. “I think last time we were a little stuck up and this time we played better (together).”

Friday’s #BIG5 top performers

Margaret Blythe, Charlotte Country Day: Blythe scored a game-high 13 points in a 53-29 win over Catawba Ridge.

Tuesday’s basketball rewind: Myers Park gets ‘smart,’ shuts down Alabama state power

Myers Park senior Bishop Boswell said Mustangs coach Scott Taylor told the team to “play smart” in the second half of their game Tuesday night in Alabama.

“Smart” worked out pretty well for the Mustangs.

Myers Park played with better control during much of the second half and ran away from a feisty Mountain Brook team 60-39 in the Jasper Holiday Classic, at Jasper High, northwest of Birmingham. Mountain Brook is the No. 3 ranked team in its state.

With officials calling a tight game, Myers Park was called for charging five times in the second quarter and six times in the opening half.

The offensive fouls prevented the Mustangs from pulling away from their Alabama opponents, and Myers Park led only 24-21 at the half.

“They were taking charges,” Boswell, speaking in a postgame interview, said of the Spartans (11-3). “We talked about it at halftime. Coach said we had to play smart.”

The Mustangs were whistled for offensive fouls three more times in the second half, but they did a much better job of running their offense and eventually pulled away from the Spartans.

In fact, Myers Park was whistled for fouls only four times in the second half until the closing minute, when substitutes were in the game.

“We didn’t have the energy we needed in the first half,” Boswell said. “We can do better than that.”

Myers Park’s lead was cut to 27-24 about a minute into the third quarter, when Creighton commit Ty Davis hit a 3-pointer for Mountain Brook. The Mustangs built a nine-point lead, but the Spartans battled back again and closed to 33-30 with three minutes left in the period.

That’s when the game changed.

A.J. Jamison and Ashton King hit back-to-back 3s, and then Boswell converted a steal into a layup. Sadiq White Jr. added a dunk just 19 seconds later, the Myers Park suddenly led 43-30. Myers Park’s defense did a solid job of shutting down passing lanes in the second half against Mountain Brook’s deliberate weave-style offense.

The Mustangs outscored a seemingly tired Mountain Brook 17-6 in the fourth quarter.

Boswell, a Tennessee commit, scored a game-high 18 points, and Sir Mohammed added 14. Davis led Mountain Brook with 12.

Notes

Myers Park shot 55 percent from the floor, hitting 22-of-40. The Mustang defense held Mountain Brook to 40 percent (14-of-35).

Eight of Mountain Brook’s 14 field goals were 3-pointers. Myers Park had a big height advantage, and when the Spartans weren’t able to break a man open with the weave offense, they were forced to settle for long jump shots.

What’s next

Myers Park plays at 8:30 p.m. again Wednesday night, facing national power Norcross (GA). Norcross defeated Central Phenix (AL) 74-59 in an earlier game Monday.

Monday’s rewind: Isaiah Evans, North Meck scare reigning national champion Link Academy

North Mecklenburg battled back — but not all the way back — and dropped a 67-59 decision Monday evening to defending national champion Link Academy in the opening round of the Isle of Palms Classic tournament in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Vikings suffered their first loss in nine games this season against a team loaded with Division 1 recruits.

One of those recruits, Texas commit Tre Johnson, scored eight of his team’s final 12 points and finished with a game-high 26 points. Johnson is ranked No. 5 nationally in the class of 2024.

North Mecklenburg got off to a fast start, building a 9-0 lead.

But Link Academy (11-2), a Branson, Mo.-based team that won the mythical national title last spring in the GEICO National Championship, battled back. Junior Jasper Johnson, who has college offers from more than a dozen Power 5 schools, scored 11 points in one stretch, and his team built a 35-26 halftime lead over the Vikings.

Link Academy’s lead grew to 41-26 before North Mecklenburg launched its comeback.

A steal and layup by Ashton Pierce cut Link Academy’s lead to 47-45 as the third quarter ended.

Link Academy rallied, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the opening 30 seconds of the fourth quarter for a 53-45 lead.

The Vikings got as close as 59-54 on a Carson Evans 3-pointer with 2:34 left to play.

But Johnson made free throws and baskets down the stretch, and North Mecklenburg never got within five points again.

Duke commit Isaiah Evans scored 20 points and added six rebounds and three blocks for the Vikings. Trey Maxwell added 13 points, and Pierce had 12 points and four assists.

North Mecklenburg doesn’t play again until 1:45 p.m. Thursday, when the Vikings face the loser of a Tuesday game between IMG Academy and Richmond Heights (Ohio).

Cannon School falls

Florida-based Montverde Academy (11-1) had no problems with Cannon School (11-4), jumping to a 31-19 first-quarter lead and expanding that to 63-33 at halftime.

The Eagles led 94-43 after three quarters and played substitutes for much of the second and fourth quarters.

Flagg led the victors with 22 points, and Derik Queen, who has not made a college commitment, added 19. Austin Swartz scored 18 for Cannon School.

The Cougars will play against at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, facing the loser of a Tuesday game between Columbus (FL) and Archbishop Ryan (PA).
