Eight teams join latest statewide high school basketball polls, plus two new No. 1s

There are eight new teams overall in the latest statewide boys’ and girls’ high school basketball rankings from The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh. There are also two new teams ranked No. 1 in their respective polls.

Let’s start on the girls’ side.

Lake Norman takes over as the new No. 1 4A team. The Wildcats (10-1) are trying to reach the NCHSAA state finals for the second year in a row. And there’s only one new ranked school: Mountain Heritage (9-2) jumps into the 1A poll at No. 8.

There was a lot of action, however, on the boys’ side:

There’s one new team in the NCISAA rankings: Northside Christian (15-6) zooms all the way to No. 2. The Knights have won seven straight games, including beating 4A No. 8 Chambers on Chambers’ home court in a Phenom Hoops’ post-Christmas event last week.

Unbeaten Davie County (11-0) joins the 4A boys’ poll at No. 10. In 3A, Fayetteville’s 71st High (7-1) is new and is ranked third. North Lincoln (9-2) is in at No. 10.

In the 2A poll, unbeaten Reidsville (7-0) takes over the top spot, and Hendersonville (7-2) joins the rankings at No. 10. In 1A, Chatham Central (10-0) is in at No. 9 and Charlotte’s Corvian Community (6-2) at No. 10.
