Wednesday’s prep girls’ basketball rewind: No. 9 North Meck routs Chambers

In Wednesday’s 69-26 win over rival Chambers High School, North Mecklenburg freshman Lenise Joseph had a night to remember.

Joseph, a 6-foot power forward, recorded her first career triple-double with 16 points, 11 blocks and 10 rebounds.

North Mecklenburg, No. 9 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, won its sixth straight game and improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the Queen City conference, just one game behind No. 4 Mallard Creek.

“I feel like things went well in general,” Joseph said. “Even when I didn’t get open shots or they weren’t falling, I was able to get it back on defense, stay solid, limiting my fouls....That’s what we want to see.”

Joseph and the Vikings are now in a stretch of games where they will be heavily favored, but they must continue to win to have a chance to win a share of the conference title.

North Meck will host conference unbeaten Mallard Creek on Feb. 2. Mallard Creek beat North Meck, 67-51, last month at home.

To get ready, North Meck coach Jennifer Baker wants her team to continue to improve on the little things — things she saw in the second half Wednesday.

“I think we did well going to the boards tonight,” Baker said. “At halftime, we made the adjustment to make sure everybody got there. I think that our ball movement is key, too, and as we get better at that, we’ll be stronger as well.”
