Hough’s bid for a dual meet wrestling state championship came to an end Wednesday night in a narrow loss.

The Huskies fell 30-29 to Grimsley in the 4A state quarterfinals. Also losing in the 4A tournament was Hickory Ridge, which dropped a 34-30 decision to Davie County.

Top-seeded Davie (22-1) then beat Grimsley 38-22 for the 4A West Regional title. Davie will face East champion Laney for the state title Saturday in Greensboro.

There won’t be a Charlotte-area team in Saturday’s finals, as Ashbrook (3A), Lincolnton (2A) and West Lincoln (2A) also lost Wednesday night.

Hough, which won the 4A dual meet state championship in 2020, had defeated Olympic and then Mallard Creek in the first two rounds Saturday. Hickory Ridge had advanced with victories over Southeast Guilford and defending state champion Northwest Guilford.
