No. 13 Cannon gets monster game from Austin Swartz, upsets No. 8 Providence Day

If Cannon School wanted a shot at winning the Charlotte Independent Schools’ conference title and earning a top seed in the N.C. Independent Schools’ playoffs, the Cougars had to win Tuesday night at Providence Day.

Mission accomplished.

Cannon’s 61-55 win avenged an earlier loss to Providence Day at home and created a three-way tie for first place with one game to play.

Cannon (23-9, 7-2) won its third straight and ended a three-game win streak for Providence Day (21-8, 7-2). Both teams are now tied with Covenant Day (20-7, 7-2) atop the league standings.

Friday, in the regular-season finale, Providence Day is at Charlotte Country Day. Covenant Day is at Charlotte Christian. Cannon is at Charlotte Latin.

And Cannon got into that first place tie after trailing for three quarters on the road.

“These games always come down to one or two possessions,” Cannon coach Che’ Roth said, “and that’s beauty of it. If you are a high level competitor, you want to compete in games like this,”

Cannon rallied with an 18-point fourth quarter, sparked by stars Austin Swartz (35 points) and Isaiah Henry (12).

“We put so much on the line, sacrifice for each other,” Henry said, “diving on (the floor for) 50-50 loose balls, hustling for rebounds, all the things that make you mentally tough.”
