Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin win NCISAA state swim titles Tuesday
Charlotte Country Day ended Cary Academy’s seven-year reign as the girls’ state swimming champion Tuesday amid a record-shattering performance.
The Buccaneer girls and Charlotte Latin boys captured team titles in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division 1 meet at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
Charlotte Latin swimmers shattered four state meet records on a day when 14 of 22 events had record-breaking performances.
Charlotte Country Day won eight of the 10 girls’ events and beat out Cary Academy 379-336 for the championship. Charlotte Latin (264) was third.
Sophomore Caroline Mallard and junior Elle Scott led the victorious Buccaneers, each winning two events and swimming on two first-place relay teams.
Mallard won the 100 butterfly in a time of 53.70 seconds, breaking the mark of 54.44 set last year by Zetta Grace Bartee of Providence Day. Bartee finished third in the event Tuesday. Mallard also won the 50 freestyle.
Scott took the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Her time of 59.96 set a record in the breaststroke.
Mallard also swam on the record-setting 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams, and Scott swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay squads.
In the boys’ events, Charlotte Latin set four meet records, with Providence Day and Charlotte Country Day each breaking two more marks.
Senior Aidan Hill had a big day for Charlotte Latin, winning the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly — the latter in record time.
The Hawks’ Norvy Clontz won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 36.70 seconds, which broke a 20-year-old record established by Ravenscroft School’s Matt McGinnis, who later went on to a successful college career at Texas. Clontz also swam on the record-setting 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
Charlotte Country Day’s record-setting winners were Freddy Klein (200 individual medley); Sante Alzate-Celin (500 freestyle); and Charlie O’Shea (100 breaststroke). And Providence Day’s 200 freestyle relay team of Dean Hamid, Nik Pillai, David Dunham and Granger Bartee broke a record in victory.
