West Charlotte High School linebacker Jaden Smith will play his college football in the SEC.

Smith committed to Kentucky on Tuesday, about a week after he was granted his release from Michigan. Smith asked for a release after Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh left for a job with the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers and some Wolverines’ assistants, with whom Smith had developed relationships, also left the school.

Last season, Smith was named The Charlotte Observer’s high school football defensive player of the year. A 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior, Smith finished the season with 91 tackles, 10 sacks, three blocked punts and two blocked field goals.

Twenty-five of his tackles were for a loss.
