Spring sports rewind: Thursday’s Charlotte-area scores and our daily honor roll

Put the defending 4A private school champion and the defending 4A public school runner-up on the same softball field ... and you get a game to remember.

That’s what happened Thursday at Hickory Ridge, where the host Ragin’ Bulls squeaked past Cannon School 7-6.

“It felt like a playoff atmosphere in February,” said Cannon School coach Chris Evans, whose team captured the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 4A championship last May.

Hickory Ridge, the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A runner-up last year, scored three times in the first inning. Two of those runs came on a home run by winning pitcher Kristyn Embler.

Cannon School cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second, in part due to Layla Wagner’s solo homer. Kayce Campurciani’s two-run home run in the fourth and another run in the fifth gave Cannon School a 5-3 lead.

But the Bulls tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Kennedy Morgan’s two-run shot, then scored two more in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-5 lead.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and scored on a walk. But Embler got Campurciani to pop out to end the game.

Morgan and Laura Herzig each had three hits, and Embler pitched a complete game, striking out 10.

Evans said the loss should help Cannon School, in the long run, noting, “The Cougars have built another tough schedule for this year, and we will be better in May, because of this game in February.”
