Spring high school sports rewind: Thursday’s Charlotte-area scores and our honor roll

Marvin Ridge built an early lead Thursday evening and held off Providence 3-1 in a meeting of area softball powers.

The visiting Mavericks, 4A state finalists in 2022, ran their record to 4-0 as junior pitcher Anna Phifer tossed a three-hitter. Phifer struck out 12 and helped her cause by smacking a single and a double.

Marvin Ridge took a 1-0 lead in the first and added runs in the second and sixth innings.

Providence (2-1) scored in the bottom of the seventh. Madeline Matteo doubled for the Panthers.

Thursday’s honor roll

Cole Bryant and Sam Bartholomew, Carmel Christian golf: Bryant and Bartholomew each fired 37’s at Gaston Country Club, leading the Cougars to a victory over Gaston Christian.

Trevor Cook, Lake Norman Charter baseball: Cook, a sophomore, pitched 4.1 innings and allowed only two hits while striking out nine. At the plate, he had two hits, stole a base, and scored four times. Lake Norman Charter beat Concord 11-1 in a South Piedmont 3A game.

Carson Dahle, East Lincoln baseball: Dahle, a senior, went 3-for-3, including a double, and drove in three runs. East Lincoln beat North Gaston 8-1.

Braden Gritz, Fort Mill boys’ soccer: Gritz, a senior, scored three goals in his team’s 7-0 victory at South Pointe.

Anna Hinde, Charlotte Christianm girls’ softball: Hinde doubled, homered, walked twice and drove in four runs as her team downed Lincoln Charter 10-3.

Kasey Holland, South Mecklenburg girls’ softball: Holland had three hits and drove in three runs as the Sabres scored a 19-0 SoMeck 4A victory at Berry.

Jack Kobuszewski, Lake Norman boys’ lacrosse: Kobuszewski won 17-of-25 draws and even scored a goal, as the Wildcats downed Page 18-6.

Caroline McSweeney, Ardrey Kell girls’ soccer: McSweeney, the Knights’ senior goalkeeper, got the shutout in a 1-0 victory over 3A power South Point.

Elizabeth Navola, Christ the King girls’ soccer: Navola got the shutout in goal, as the Crusaders blanked Cannon School 2-0. Christ the King, the two-time defending 1A state champion, is off to a 2-0 start.

Liam Parsons, East Mecklenburg baseball: Parsons collected two hits, scored three times and stole two bases as the Eagles trounced Southwestern 4A foe Rocky River 14-4.

Carly Rankin, Piedmont girls’ soccer: Rankin scored four goals as Piedmont trounced North Mecklenburg 10-1.

Sydney Thune, Charlotte Latin girls’ softball: Thune struck out 18 and pitched the Hawks to a 5-0 victory over Mountain Island Charter.

Colby VanHook, Hickory Grove Christian baseball: VanHook worked five one-hit hittings and struck out eight, as the Lions blanked Union Academy 6-0. At the plate, VanHook slammed a two-run home run and knocked in three runs.
