For the first time all season, Myers Park is no longer the No. 1 ranked team in the greater Charlotte region.

After upsetting Myers Park on Friday night at Myers Park, North Mecklenburg moves up to No. 1 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 boys’ basketball poll.

The Sweet 16, which began in the 1984-85 season, ranks the top teams in the media company’s coverage area, which includes schools in the following counties: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lancaster, Lincoln, Union and York.

Rankings are based on strength of schedule, strength of a classification, team success within that classification and head-to-head competition between teams ranked in the Sweet 16. It does not consider how ranked teams would fare against each other — or other unranked teams — unless those teams actually meet.

The Sweet 16 champions, named at the end of the season, will get a banner to hang in the school’s gym.

There was some change in the boys’ poll this week.

Myers Park, ranked as high as fourth in the nation last week, fell to No. 4.

One new team joined: Charlotte’s Corvian Community Charter, which was scheduled to play in an NCHSAA 1A regional championship game Monday night, is in at No. 16.

There’s a new No. 1 in the girls poll, too.

N.C. Independent Schools’ state champion Cannon School jumps to No. 1 after previous No. 1 Mallard Creek was upset by Watauga in the third round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs.

Charlotte Catholic, which has a 4A state semifinal with Watauga on Thursday, moves to No. 2.

There are no new girls’ teams ranked this week.

NOTE: The final Sweet 16 polls of the season will run in April, when champions will be announced.
