High School Sports

Which are the best high school football teams in NC? Our rankings after Week 2

There’s a new No. 1 team in one of the N.C. statewide high school football polls this week.

The weekly polls are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh, the two largest newspapers in the Carolinas.

In the 2A poll, longtime power Reidsville — the reigning state champ — jumps up one spot to No. 1 after former No. 1 Shelby was blown out by 3A Asheville Reynolds Friday. Reynolds is No. 6 in the 3A poll.

Note: Due to an increased number of postponements and cancellations from Week 2 games, the NCISAA poll will return next week.

The polls are compiled by Chris Hughes, 47, who has been going to N.C. high school football games since 1979. He began coaching high school football in 1998 and began covering the sport professionally in 2002 when he launched a statewide website. In 2007, he started CarolinaPreps.com, when he began to do football rankings. Hughes, who has also done color commentary for Shrine Bowl broadcasts, has visited every high school stadium in North Carolina.
