High school football roundup: Butler gives SC power Irmo a game before OT loss
Don’t count out the Butler High Bulldogs just yet.
Yes, the Bulldogs, normally a state power, fell to 0-3 after Friday’s loss to S.C. state power Irmo. But after being blown out by Rolesville and losing to Richmond Senior without starting quarterback Zach Lawrence last week, Butler started looking an awful lot like a team that could make the N.C. playoffs.
Irmo, the No. 4-ranked team in South Carolina, won 35-34, after a bad snap on a potential game-winning play prevented Butler from getting a signature win.
Butler went up 28-21 with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 4:28 left. Irmo answered with 96 seconds left, scoring a touchdown and a conventional extra point. That left the game tied.
Butler got the ball back and drove to the Irmo 35. The Bulldogs missed a wide-open pass play near the Irmo goal line with 18.1 seconds left when a pass was dropped. After another incomplete pass, Butler completed a pass inside the Irmo 5 with 3.6 seconds left.
Time expired before the Bulldogs could run another play. Butler didn’t have any timeouts.
The game went into overtime.
AJ Brand, a Virginia Tech commit, scored on a QB run on Irmo’s first overtime play from the Butler 10. Irmo led 35-28.
Butler scored on its second play of its first overtime possession. The Bulldogs called timeout as it was attempting an extra point. Bulldogs coach Glenwood Ferebee decided to go for a 2-point conversion, trying to win the game. Butler suffered a bad snap on the play. The ball squirted on the ground and Irmo’s defense made the stop, sealing the win.
No. 2 Providence Day 24, No. 9 Charlotte Catholic 9: The Chargers struggled with penalties and timing early, and a bad snap near the end zone gave Catholic a safety and a 9-7 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Chargers were able to move the ball and get in the end zone after just scoring seven points in their last game against Weddington last month.
No. 3 Northwestern 48, South Florence 7: Northwestern jumped out to a 34-0 halftime lead and cruised in its warm-up game before next week’s city showdown with South Pointe. Northwestern QB Finley Polk was 18 of 28 for 290 yards and five touchdowns. He connected with Kameron Vance seven times for 140 yards and three touchdowns.
No. 7 Hough 41, Carolina Forest 0: Hough senior Jycen Anciso ran 14 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Huskies on the road. Jamison Funderburk also had two touchdowns rushing. On defense, Edward Conover had eight tackles and one tackle for a loss for Hough and senior Cameron Cyr had three sacks.
No. 14 Mooresville 66, West Rowan 0: Mooresville jumped out to a 52-0 halftime lead and won easily. The Blue Devils improved to 2-1.
Eric Heal scored three times for Mooresville, which is averaging 53.3 points per game. Mooresville has topped 60 points in two of its three games this season.
Providence 56, Hunter Huss 27: Junior QB Jackson Debe was 11 for 12 for 230 yards and four touchdowns for Providence; he didn’t play in the second half. Sophomore receiver Octavio Oliviera had four catches for 80 yards and two scores. Junior receiver Shawn Matthews had three catches for 67 yards and a score, and sophomore Keland Shelton caught two passes for 62 yards and a score.
Alexander Central 28, North Iredell 19: Jeremiah Whitaker ran 13 times for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He had two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a game-sealing 6-yard run with 3:53 to play. Kaleb Sales ran 19 times for 130 yards and a score for North Iredell.
