Mallard Creek traveled to Ohio on Saturday and beat the No. 1 team in that state, taking down Cincinnati’s Moeller High School 21-14 in overtime.

After that win, the Mavericks (2-1) jumped six spots to No. 4 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 high school football poll.

Also this week, two new teams joined the poll:

Porter Ridge (4-0) is in at No. 12. The Pirates beat West Cabarrus 41-7 Friday and have been dominant this season. Porter Ridge, which plays No. 11 Monroe (3-0) at home Friday, has outscored its opponents 177-40.

The other new team is Lake Norman (3-1). The Wildcats upset Marvin Ridge 22-16 Friday, when the Mavericks were No. 16 in The Sweet 16. Lake Norman freshman QB Kaden Craft was 15 of 18 for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He ran 18 times for 106 yards and a score. Lake Norman plays AL Brown Friday.
