High school football Gameday: Your guide to the weekend’s games

A look ahead at this weekend’s high school football games involving York and Lancaster teams:

A.C. Flora (3-1, 0-0 Region 3 4A) at South Pointe (2-2, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. — One week after facing Northwestern’s explosive passing attack, South Pointe must face another. The visiting Falcons are led by QB Rofer Wentzky, who has thrown for 2.075 yards with 12 touchdowns and just three interceptions. South Pointe will hope to keep the ball out of Wentzky’s hands, behind RB Mason Pickett-Hicks (470 rushing yards) and a ball-control attack.

Andrew Jackson (0-3) at Lewisville (3-1), 7:30 p.m. — You don’t often see “0-3” behind the words “Andrew Jackson,” but the Volunteers have been stung by defensive problems this season. The offense is strong, though, and Damius Seegars scored on a run and pass last week and broke a 41-yard run during the game. Lewisville was rolling along until last week’s 33-8 thumping at the hands of Fairfield Central. The Lions gave up 318 rushing yards in that contest.

Buford (1-3) at Great Falls (1-3), 7:30 p.m. — These schools are separate by just 24 miles, but they’re meeting for only the third time in the past decade. Buford won in 2015, Great Falls in 2020. Each team has a solid defense, and points could be hard to come by in this game.

Catawba Ridge (3-1, 0-0 Region 3 5A) at Fort Mill (1-2, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. — A pair of Fort Mill schools meet in a region opener. Catawba Ridge QB C.J. Couch, with 1,080 passing yards, ranks second in the Charlotte area to Charlotte Latin’s Troy Logan. Couch and WR’s Josh Ameo and Braylen Burgis lead an explosive Copperhead offense that is averaging 37 points a game. But Fort Mill can move the ball, too, with QB Quinn Kelly throwing for 223 yards last week against Lancaster. The Yellowjackets scored 20 points in a fourth-quarter comeback that fell five points short a week ago.

Dreher (2-1, 0-0 Region 3 4A) at York (1-3, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. — It’s the first meeting in at least 25 years for these schools, now members of the same region. York’s offense has come to life in the past few weeks, with QB Tayshon Freeman throwing for 840 yards in four games.

Marvin Ridge (2-2) at Indian Land (3-0), 7:30 p.m. — Marvin Ridge WR Alex Voss leads the Charlotte area with 413 yards, and QB Braydon Rediger has thrown for 710 yards. Indian Land counters with RB Jamol Horton, who has carried for 374 yards and is a threat to score whenever he breaks a tackle.

Nation Ford (1-3, 0-0 Region 3 5A) at No. 2 Northwestern (4-0, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. — Off-the-field events have been the big story in the lead-up to this game. Michael Allen, in his 14th year as Nation Ford head coach, resigned abruptly this week. Jason McManus has moved up from offensive coordinator duties to serve as head coach.

On the field, Nation Ford will try to match its passing attack against Northwestern’s aerial game. Nation Ford QB Carson Sanford has thrown for 931 yards, not far behind Northwestern QB Finley Polk’s 1,040-yard total. Figure on plenty of points in this one.

Rock Hill (1-3, 0-0 Region 3 5A) at Clover (3-1, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. — Clover beat Rock Hill 58-21 a year ago, with Landon Stone rushing for 197 yards. Stone is back, with the Blue Eagles hoping to open defense of their region championship with a victory. Clover has outscored foes 85-18 in the last two games. Rock Hill is led by WR Malik Clark, who has 343 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
