Which are the top high school football teams in NC heading into Week 7? Check our polls

Three new teams join the N.C. statewide high school rankings from The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh this week.

There is also one new No. 1.

In the 1A poll, former No. 1 Tarboro (4-1) lost 47-23 to Havelock last week. Havelock is No. 9 in this week’s 3A poll. Tarboro fell two spots to No. 3 in 1A.

Mount Airy (6-0) takes over the top spot. The Granite Bears have shut out two of their past three opponents and play at home against East Wilkes Friday.

There is one new team in the 2A poll: Wallace-Rose Hill’s Bulldogs, from Teachey, N.C. After a 1-2 start, with losses to 3A Havelock and 4A Hoggard, the Bulldogs have won three straight games, including an 82-0 win over South Lenoir last week.

Hoggard (4-1) and Mount Tabor (4-1) join the 4A poll.

Hoggard, from Wilmington, has won four straight games since a 35-32 loss in its first game to Cleveland. Cleveland is No. 8 in this week’s 4A poll.

Mount Tabor, from Winston-Salem, lost 34-12 to 4A No. 2 Greensboro Grimsley on Aug. 23, but has won four straight games, including a 42-0 win over Winston-Salem’s R.J. Reynolds in its last game.

Note: The rankings are compiled by longtime N.C. football expert Chris Hughes.
