Independence High’s Clarke Henry named Observer athlete of the week

Independence High’s Clarke Henry is The Observer’s high school athlete of the week.

The Patriots’ senior outside hitter had 23 kills, 13 digs and six aces in a 3-1 win over Providence Sept. 30. The next day, Henry had 15 kills, five digs and three blocks in a 3-2 loss at East Mecklenburg.

Henry finished off the week with 20 kills and 15 digs in a 3-0 victory at Union Academy Oct. 2.

Henry, who started her career during COVID, has played 31/2 seasons, the first two at South Mecklenburg. She then transferred to Levine Middle College, which allowed her to play at Independence.

This season, Henry has a team-high 304 kills, 43 aces and 24 blocks for the Patriots (18-6), who were scheduled to play Mint Hill rival Rocky River (7-11) Monday.

Henry has committed to Division I University of Missouri-Kansas City and ranks No. 21 statewide this season in kills.
