Which are the top high school football teams in North Carolina? Our rankings before Week 7

There are six new teams in the N.C. statewide high school football rankings from The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh as we head into Week 7 of the season.

Of those six teams, four are in the 2A class.

In the 2A poll, Whiteville (5-1), Walkertown (5-1), Burns (4-2) and Bunker Hill (4-1) are the newcomers.

Whiteville has won three consecutive games to move into first place in the Waccamaw 1A/2A conference. Since a 21-20 loss to North Davidson on Sept. 13, Walkertown has won two straight games and allowed just six points.

Burns High, from Lawndale, has back-to-back losses to two 3A powers — Cleveland County rivals Crest and Kings Mountain — but the Bulldogs have won three in a row since, by a combined score of 132-15.

And Bunker Hill, from Claremont, beat rival West Lincoln 35-21 last week and has won two straight.

In the 3A poll, Belmont’s South Point High joins the rankings. South Point beat previously unbeaten Crest, 27-26, last week. Crest dropped to No. 10 in the 3A rankings. South Point, which is 4-0, is ranked No. 9.

Finally, in the 4A poll, Clayton — coached by former Myers Park coach Scott Chadwick — is the new team joining the rankings. The Comets are off to a 6-0 start and play at South Garner on Friday.
