Myers Park boys’ soccer takes advantage of chances, blanks Ardrey Kell in conference match

Myers Park remained at the top of the SoMeck 4A conference after defeating rival Ardrey Kell 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Both teams entered the match on five-game winning streaks and identical conference records of 7-0-1. Both of the streaks began after their first match-up earlier in the season, which ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

This time, Myers Park (13-0-2, 8-0-1) took advantage and stayed undefeated and got a conference lead with three games left to play.

Myers Park got the key goal at the 13:56 mark. Mustangs’ forward Aidan Wilson scored with a short kick after rebounding a missed attempt by forward Femi Ogunwale.

Myers Park did not allow Ardrey Kell to follow up with a response as Myers Park denied all of their shot attempts for the rest of the half.

Halfway through the second half, Myers Park forward Beni Sibu rebounded a missed shot attempt and then blasted in a goal to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

Ardrey Kell missed several opportunities at goals and Myers Park finished the match with solid defensive play to lock in the victory.

“Just like the top of this conference, be it Myers Park, AK (Ardrey Kell) or South Meck, those games are always going to be tight,” Myers Park coach Bucky McCarley said. “You have to finish your chances. I believe both of our goals came off rebounds. Not only do they have good center-backs and an excellent goalkeeper, but we had to have two or three guys involved in every single one of those attacks.”

WHAT’S NEXT

Myers Park will look to extend its win streak at home Thursday versus Olympic.

Ardrey Kell hopes to rebound on the road Thursday against South Meck, which is in third place in the SoMeck 4A conference.
