Five new teams enter NC statewide prep football rankings after Week 9

Five new teams join the N.C. statewide high school rankings this week.

The rankings are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh.

Four of the five teams are in the private school rankings, where Rabun Gap (GA) takes over the top spot. Rabun Gap has played in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association for many years.

The Eagles beat Providence Day 46-13 Friday. Providence Day had been No. 1 in the private poll all season. The Chargers fell to No. 2 after the loss.

New to the poll this week are Metrolina Christian (5-3), Charlotte Country Day (4-5), Cannon School (4-5) and Hickory Grove (6-2).

The one other new school is in the 3A rankings, where Ashbrook (7-1) is ranked No. 9. The Green Wave beat previously unbeaten South Point High, from Belmont, Friday. It was Ashbrook’s fourth straight win and South Point’s first loss.
