Which are the best high school football teams in North Carolina? Four teams join our polls

Four new teams join the N.C. statewide high school football rankings this week.

The rankings are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer of Raleigh and appear weekly throughout the regular season.

Joining the polls this week are Asheville School (private), Southeast Alamance (2A), Cape Fear (3A) and Charlotte Catholic (4A).

Asheville School, which plays Wake Christian Friday, is the No. 1 seed for the NCISAA Division II playoffs.

The Blues beat Hickory Grove 42-0 last week and have not lost to an N.C. team this season.

Southeast Alamance, from Haw River, N.C., is 9-0 and has only allowed 52 points all season. The Stallions have four shutouts.

Cape Fear, from Fayetteville, has won three straight, including Friday’s 39-6 win over city rival South View. The Colts play Gray’s Creek Friday.

And Charlotte Catholic, which is off this week, has won six straight games, including Friday’s 52-3 win over East Mecklenburg that locked up the Southwestern 4A conference championship.
