NCHSAA state soccer championship central: Game recaps, live scores, schedule and more
Western Alamance and Mount Airy joined Wakefield in winning state championships Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s boys’ soccer finals at the Matthews SportsPlex.
Each of Saturday’s championship matches was decided by one goal.
Wakefield opened the day with a 3-2 victory over Marvin Ridge for the 4A championship.
Then Mount Airy scored the decisive goal with a little more than six minutes remaining for a 4-3 triumph over Hobbton for the 1A state crown.
The day finished with Western Alamance battling back from a 3-0 halftime deficit for a 4-3 overtime conquest of Asheboro in the 3A championship.

3A: WESTERN ALAMANCE 4, ASHEBORO 3 (OT)
Asheboro dominated the opening 40 minutes, but Western Alamance more than made up for it in the final 40.
The Warriors scored four goals in the second half, including three by Noah Barrett, for the 3A championship.
Asheboro (27-3) built its lead on goals by Cam Letterlough, Ozmar Martinez and Diego Bustamante.
Western Alamance began its comeback just 31 seconds into the second half, on Barrett’s first goal. Grant Bacchus scored in the 45th minute, and Barrett tied the match with 3:01 left.
Barrett scored his third goal of the match, on a right-footed shot into the bottom left of the goal, just 1:39 into the first overtime. The Warriors held Asheboro scoreless for the rest of the first 10-minute overtime and then through the second extra period.
Asheboro had a chance to tie the match with 4:58 left in the second overtime, but Omar Alvarez’s shot was saved by Western Alamance goalkeeper Eamon Hipps.
1A: MOUNT AIRY 4, HOBBTON 3
Angel Ortiz-Osamo notched a hat trick in leading the Granite Bears (24-3) to their first ever soccer state championship, by a 4-3 score over Hobbton (23-6-1). Ortiz-Osamo’s third goal came with about six minutes remaining.
Mount Airy had taken a 3-1 lead, but Hobbton battled back with two goals late in the second half. The second of those, by David Garcia, tied the match in the 72nd minute.
It was the first state soccer title for Mount Airy.
4A: WAKEFIELD 4, MARVIN RIDGE 3
In a game that had 15 shots on goal, Wakefield beat Marvin Ridge in the 4A finals.
Wakefield jumped on the Mavericks early before Marvin Ridge fought back to tie, but Wakefield got the championship goal in the second half.
Marvin Ridge ends the season at 18-5-2. Wakefield finished 23-4.
3A: CLINTON 3, SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH 1
Clinton captured the school’s second boys’ soccer state title by pulling away from Southwestern Randolph for a 3-1 victory in the 3A championship match Friday night.
The Darkhorses (28-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, as Holden Spell scored off an assist from Chris Zeleya. But the Cougars (25-3), playing in a state championship for the first time, evened the score just 27 seconds after Spell’s goal, on a tally by Fernando Hernandez.
In the 37th minute, Brandt Sumner’s low liner flew into the left side of the net, giving Clinton a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The Darkhorses made it 3-1 in the eighth minute of the second half, as David Paz beat Cougar goalkeeper Jonathan Perez-Dominguez from 10 yards out.
